Balance

10/04/2021

I have started on the second draft of my book upon reaching a proper ending last week. I find that drafting through the second time is actually more difficult than writing for the first time, as it involves learning what should be kept or what may need to be cut. Often times I find that I added a lot more detail than I needed to or that I did not have enough dialogue to enhance the scene. I think that finding the proper balance between dialogue and detail is key to writing a good book because readers pay attention to both parts equally.

When it comes to detail, I want everything to be easily pictured. The reader should be able to easily insert themselves into my setting and be able to envision everything that is happening. As for dialogue, I believe that this is where all of the connections between characters come from as well as many of the surprises. Often times big reveals are done through the dialogue. I think that finding this proper balance will help to make my book better and much easier to read. Without a proper balance, a book could come off as wordy or too simple, and I hope to avoid both of these issues by focusing on balance in my drafting process.
